Help support rangers to protect elephants and rhinos by training rangers on crime scene forensics!

Description

The problem: elephant and rhino poaching in Africa

We are in the midst of a global poaching crisis. A shocking 100 elephants are killed every day across Africa for their tusks. In South Africa, home to 80% of Africa's remaining rhinos, poaching has escalated from 13 killed in 2007 to over 7,425 rhinos slaughtered violently for their horns in the past 10 years. It's a war that must be fought on many fronts, including ensuring that poachers are arrested and successfully prosecuted.

How can you help?

Like every crime scene, forensic evidence must be carefully collected to build a case against the criminals. But in wildlife reserves, forensic evidence collection falls on the shoulders of rangers who have received little to no training. This project will raise funds to train and equip wildlife rangers on crime scene management and forensics.

The Details

In October,  a team of wildlife and forensics experts from New York State's Department of Environmental Conservation are donating their time to travel to South Africa to train wildlife rangers. The four-day course will include  the basics of crime scene forensics including securing the crime scene, fingerprinting, crime scene photography, footprint casting, ballistics analysis and DNA collection.

Your funds will be used to train 20 rangers from five wildlife reserves across four African countries (South Africa, Mozambique, Swaziland and the Democratic Republic of Congo)! This includes the provision of five fully stocked forensic kits for each of the ranger teams. This will ensure that once the training has been conducted, they can go back to the wildlife reserves that they protect, and put their training to work with the right equipment and supplies.

In addition to the invaluable training each ranger will receive, this is an amazing opportunity for the international group of wildlife rangers to meet and learn together, share experiences and forge relationships across borders. This helps to boost ranger morale and show them that the world very much appreciates their efforts to protect wildlife for us all.

How will your donation be spent?

Our goal is to raise $9,725 US in funds to be able to fully equip the rangers and train them on the essentials of wildlife crime scene management and forensics.

BUDGET - WILDLIFE CRIME SCENE TRAINING
We will fully equip 5 teams of rangers. The specialist trainers are volunteering their time and paying their own airfares to South Africa. The only travel costs we are requesting is for the hire of a mini-van during their time on the ground in South Africa to travel to and from the training site, plus accomodation. For a detailed break-down of contents of forensic kits, see detailed budget.
